  41. if you REALLY mean *anywhere*, as in many DIFFERENT target modems,
  42. then the modem is defective by default and should be returned to USR
  43. for repair.... I seriously doubt that your phone lines could cause
  44. only this behavior.... when you are connected, do you hear low level
  45. noises from the modems speaker???  I have one with a bad
  46. "motherboard", which I presume has a bad power supply, and it does
  47. some pretty bizarre things at times....
